LORNE DECKING PROJECT

Situated on the Erskine River in Lorne, Melbourne Australia this particular swing bridge is an iconic landmark on the famous Victorian Great Ocean Road. Decking Out Melbourne along with its construction partners completed the project in March 2014.Originally built in 1934 the bridge had structurally become unsafe and closed in early 2013.

The aim of the project was to retain the original appearance of the Bridge and use “like for like” materials where possible. The decking board used was a 250mm x 50mm Australian Hardwood called Iron Bark with a 150mm x 75mm curbing beam in the same material. Boards were laid on a 150mm x 75mm treated pine joist.

However to comply with modern engineering and safety requirements, some steel components had to be used, but in the same shape as the original structure.

The bridge is loved, used and valued by the local Lorne community and visitors alike and the objective of the works were to ensure this iconic landmark is preserved for future generations. Although given a very small window to complete the project, the Bridge was finished on time and a grand opening held on the March Labor Day holiday.
